Questions

What do I send if I agree?

The completed, signed and dated Response form.

If you filed married filing jointly, both spouses sign.

Upload it, or fax or mail it to the location on the notice, by the due date.

Do I need to amend my return?

No, if you agree and have no other income, credits or expenses to report.

If you do have other items, file Form 1040-X and write “CP2000” at the top.

When a 1040-X is needed for a CP2000

Agree with every change: $49. See first if that fits, free.

When should I pay?

You can pay the proposed amount online now, or wait for the IRS to send a bill.

If you wait, interest keeps accruing until the amount is paid in full.

Paying within 30 days stops additional interest, and possibly additional penalties.

What if I can’t pay it all?

You can apply for a long-term payment plan, called an installment agreement. A user fee may apply.

Even with a plan, you still return the signed Response form by the due date.

What if the notice shows a refund?

If your signature is requested, sign the form and return it in the envelope provided.

Pub 5181 says to expect the refund in 6 to 8 weeks, if you have no unpaid tax or other debts the IRS must collect.
