Same income on a 1099-K and 1099-NEC: your CP2000 reply
By Tax Letter Desk Updated November 4, 2026
Short answer
IRS instructions say card and payment app payments go on Form 1099-K, not on Form 1099-NEC.
If one payment shows up on both, and your CP2000 adds it, you can dispute that item.
Show where you reported it once, and break down the total.
Checked November 4, 2026 against IRS 1099-NEC instructions (Dec 2026) , IRS Pub 5181 (Dec 2022) .

Which form should a payment be on?

How do I dispute the duplicate?
Mark the disagree box for that item.
Name the line or schedule where the income appears once.
Break down any total that includes it.
Attach copies of both forms and your records.
Can the payer correct a form?
For a 1099-K, contact the issuer named as “Filer” on the top left. Ask for a corrected form.
The IRS says it can’t correct a Form 1099-K for you.
Keep the corrected form and your correspondence.
Do I still report all income?
Yes. The IRS says you must report all income, whether or not you get a 1099-K.
