How to respond to a CP2000 notice

By Tax Letter Desk Updated November 2026

Short answer

A CP2000 isn’t a bill. It’s an IRS proposal to adjust your income, payments, credits or deductions.

Respond within 30 days of the notice date, or 60 days if you live outside the United States.

Agree, or disagree with a signed statement, then upload, fax or mail your reply.

Questions

What is a CP2000 notice?

The IRS receives income information from third parties, such as employers and banks.

When it doesn’t match the return you filed, the IRS sends a CP2000. It proposes changes to your income, payments, credits or deductions.

The result may be more tax owed, or a refund of taxes paid.

How long do I have to respond?

The IRS asks for a reply within 30 days of the notice date. If you live outside the United States, you have 60 days.

The response date printed on your notice is the one that counts.

Need more time? The IRS says to send your extension request with a reply option.

How do I respond?

You can agree or disagree with each change. Here is the process the IRS describes.

Read the whole notice Note the response date printed on it.

Agree, or disagree If you agree, complete, sign and date the Response form. On a joint return, both spouses sign.

Explain what you disagree with Mark the box on the Response form. Add a signed statement saying why, with your documents.

Send it by the due date Use the IRS Document Upload Tool, or fax or mail it to the number or address on the notice.

What if I agree and owe tax?

The amount usually includes interest from the due date of the return. Interest keeps running until it’s paid in full.

Paying the proposed amount within 30 days stops additional interest. Some penalties may apply but may not be shown.

Can’t pay in full? The IRS lists a payment plan or an offer in compromise.

What if I have other items to report?

If the notice is correct but you have other items to report, file Form 1040-X for the tax year on page one of the notice.

Write “CP2000” at the top of the form.

What happens if I don’t respond?

Without a reply by the response date, the IRS sends a Statutory Notice of Deficiency, the CP3219A.

To challenge it, you file a petition with the Tax Court by the date listed on that notice. The court can’t consider a late petition.

Without a petition, the IRS assesses the changes and sends a bill.
