CP2501 vs CP2000: what each letter asks of you

By Tax Letter Desk Updated November 4, 2026

Short answer

Both letters come from IRS reviews by mail, covered together in Pub 5181.

With a CP2501, if you agree, the IRS figures the tax due and sends a CP2000.

A CP2000 proposes a change in tax, with a reply date. We help with CP2000 replies only.
