Questions

What does the IRS ask for?

Mark the appropriate box on the Response form if you disagree with some or all of the changes.

Reply with a signed statement explaining why. Include any documents you want considered.

What makes a statement easy to follow?

Pub 5181 gives these tips for a reply.

Address each issue in the notice.

Name the line or schedule where you reported the amount.

If it’s part of a larger total, break that total down.

Didn’t receive it, or think it isn’t taxable? Say so.

Can’t document an amount? Explain how you figured it.

Dispute one item or more: $179. The check comes first, free.

How should I send documents?

Send photocopies, not originals.

If you fax, put your name and SSN or taxpayer ID on each page.

Uploads accept photos or scans as JPG, PNG or PDF files.

What if a payer’s form is wrong?

Ask the payer for a corrected document, or a statement on why it’s wrong.

Send a copy with your response.

What happens after I send it?

If the IRS accepts your explanation, it sends a letter saying it accepts your return as filed.

If it accepts some issues but not all, it sends a revised notice with only what’s left.

If it doesn’t accept it, it tells you why.
