What happens if you ignore a CP2000, and how to avoid it

By Tax Letter Desk Updated November 4, 2026

Short answer

If the IRS doesn’t hear from you by the response date, it sends a Statutory Notice of Deficiency, the CP3219A.

Pub 5181 gives 90 days from that notice to petition the Tax Court.

Without a petition, the IRS assesses the changes and sends a bill.

What does the IRS send if I don’t reply?

A Statutory Notice of Deficiency, the CP3219A. Pub 5181 says it comes by certified mail.

It explains how the amount was figured, and how to challenge it in the U.S. Tax Court.

How long do I have after a CP3219A?

Pub 5181 gives 90 days from the date of the notice to petition the Tax Court.

File by the date listed on the notice. The court can’t consider a late petition.

Interest keeps accruing until the balance is paid.
