A CP2000 can list several proposed changes. You can disagree with some or all of them.

Mark the box, and explain each item you dispute in a signed statement, with your documents.

Questions

How do I agree with some items and not others?

On the Response form, mark the box for disagreeing with some or all of the changes.

Pub 5181 asks you to address each issue in the notice.

Answer 7 questions and choose, item by item. We prepare the rest.

What should I write for each disputed item?

The line or schedule where you reported the amount.

A breakdown, if it’s part of a larger total.

Why it’s left off, if you didn’t receive it or think it isn’t taxable.

Copies of your documents, not originals.

What happens next?

If the IRS accepts some issues but not all, it sends a revised notice.

The revised notice includes only what wasn’t resolved. Review it, then agree or disagree and respond.

What about the amount due meanwhile?

Interest keeps accruing until the amount is paid in full.

Pub 5181 describes one option: pay the full proposed amount and designate it a “6603 deposit” to stop interest.
